Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas and take action.

Founded by a group of La Jolla neighbors and professionals, the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club was officially chartered in 1984.

A Bit of History…
George Dewhurst, Steven Brown, and Gary Orsa pioneered the La Jolla Sunrise organization, as George Dewhurst served as the club’s inaugural president from 1984-1985, followed by Steven Downey (1985–86), Gary Orsa (1986–87), and Jim McDonald (1987–88). The club achieved its official Rotary status upon reaching approximately 15 members.

In its early years, the club operated without a foundation, keeping things simple by collecting dues and paying bills. Leadership rotated annually, and club responsibilities were shared among a small but committed group of members. Over the decades, the club has grown in both size and impact, welcoming back past members and evolving with the times while maintaining its strong sense of service and camaraderie.

Service Above Self

The La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club meets weekly on Thursdays at 6:58 AM at the La Jolla Shores Hotel, offering members a scenic view of the Pacific Ocean during their gatherings. Over the years, the club has been actively involved in various community service projects. Notably, since 2009, the club—through a partnership with the Paula and Oliver Jones Family Foundation—has awarded over $120,000 in scholarships to more than 120 graduates of the San Pasqual Academy, a residential education campus for foster youth.

Another significant initiative is the annual “Walk for the Trail” fundraiser, supporting the maintenance and repair of the historic Coast Walk Trail in La Jolla. Additionally, the club hosts the “Litchfield Memorial Swim,” honoring the legacy of Bob Litchfield and promoting community engagement through this cherished event.

A cornerstone of the club's international outreach is the Gift of Life program, championed by long-time member Estelle Ebert. Through this initiative, the club has facilitated life-saving heart surgeries for children from underserved regions, including Romania. In collaboration with Gift of Life International and other Rotary partners, the club supported a global grant that funded surgeries and training to establish a sustainable pediatric cardiac program at Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital in Bucharest. Estelle Ebert served as the primary international contact for this project, reflecting her deep commitment to global humanitarian service.

The La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club continues to embody the Rotary International motto of "Service Above Self," fostering fellowship among members while making meaningful contributions to both local and international communities.
